Alpine to Fort Davis
Add To My Trip
This lonely neck of the Trans-Pecos region is particularly beloved in summer, when the mile-high setting registers the coolest temperatures in Texas. Any time of year, however, is perfect for riding horses into the rugged swells around Fort Davis' Prude Ranch, hiking the steep trails in Davis Mountains State Park, exploring the restored cavalry post buildings and Buffalo Soldier history at Fort Davis National Historic Site, and studying the night skies at the fascinating McDonald Observatory. About 20 minutes east in Alpine, rockhounds thrill to the gems they discover at Woodward Ranch and Wild West history aficionados find plenty of fodder for their interests at the Museum of the Big Bend at Sul Ross State University.
