This museum is housed in the county's third jail building, a fortress-like
structure made of local handmade brick around 1880. The structure has
extra-thick brick walls and some original floors. The dungeon (prison cells) was
upstairs, and the sheriff and his family lived downstairs. The building was used
as residence from 1913–67, when a group of local citizens rescued it from
destruction and decided it was the ideal location for county museum. Today, it
features artifacts from the county's beginnings in 1851, including Civil War
items. Also on grounds are two pre-Civil War cabins, an antique telephone
museum, and a 1930s Assembly of God Church established in hopes of reforming
bootleggers of the county at the time. Open 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Wed. and Fri.–Sat.
Admission charge. 302 E. Main St., one block east of courthouse.
