A musical force equipped with the soulful vocals of Janis Joplin and the guitar slinging skills of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Carolyn Wonderland reaches into the depths of the Texas blues tradition with the wit of a poet. She hits the stage with unmatched presence, a true legend in her time.

In 2009, Carolyn Wonderland won Best Female Vocalist and Best Blues Band at the Austin Music Awards. She has appeared on television shows Austin City Limits, Time of Your Life, and Homicide. Carolyn has been featured in top slots at major festivals around the world and even performed at the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame’s 2009 Joplin tribute. Carolyn’s 2008 release Miss Understood reached the Top 10 on Billboard’s Blues chart, and her new album Peace Meal is already being met with critical acclaim.

From classic Blues licks to gospel crooning, and her famous whistling to peace anthems, Wonderland gathers her friends and inspirations and pulls out all the stops to give music fans all they can handle.

When it comes to Texas...

Most remote gig in Texas you have ever played?
We once played a wedding deep in a cave at Longhorn Cavern State Park in Burnet, TX, rumored to have been Texas outlaw Sam Bass' hideout.

What’s your definition of Texas music?
There's a certain lilt and swagger that holds the beats together, unifying all genres into this Texas stew. From Billy Joe Shaver to Townes, to Lightnin' Hopkins, Willie Nelson, Freddie King, Bob Wills, Doug Sahm and Gatemouth Brown... Heck even the gospel, metal, jazz, hip hop and especially the Tejano all have something in how the notes hang together. I think it's something you feel more than hear. Maybe it's to fit the way we dance...

Best place to see Texas music?
I have so many favorites…Dan Electro’s or the Last Concert Cafe in Houston, Antone’s in Austin, The Kessler in Dallas, Sam’s Burger Joint in San Antonio.

Favorite Texas album?
Shelley King is the 2008 Texas State Musician, so any of her albums, like Armadillo Bootleg.

Place you’d take someone who’s never been to Texas?
Marfa and Austin

Best four-day Texas vacation?
Since I’m on the road all the time, the best vacation to me is just to stay at home! But I always recommend to folks when I’m traveling to fly into Austin and then drive out to Marfa. That way you get a good night of live music and then a gorgeous drive out to the desert, so you can understand just how big and diverse and interesting the state is.
